Math, What’s the Solution?
Mathematics has always been something that you either love or hate. We all use math for everyday activities such as buying something from the store, or distributing candy evenly between friends on Halloween. Math in everyone’s daily life is pretty easy, however mathematics in a classroom is a whole different world. Calculus, Statistics, Math analysis, Algebra, and so much more are all examples of classroom math. Each type of math comes with its own problems, and not just the actual math problems themselves. A more in depth explanation of this is that in Pre-Calculus you are not allowed to use a calculator. Not being able to use a calculator is a major setback when it comes to working on math problems. When it comes to math class you will always run into some sort of problem whether that may be a math problem or a problem learning.
It’s a major issue that too many students are failing math class. I know many friends personally. In other classes such as English and science not as many students fail. I have even failed math before it happens to nearly everybody. In transition from high school to college the amount of students that fail math rises. This is a major problem that not only affects a students gpa, but also their eligibility to graduate.
Obviously if there are students failing math there must be students passing math. The question is do they pass? Studying alone has worked for students, but that doesn’t work for everybody. Many students are so lost that they don’t know where to start working by themselves. Maybe studying it groups would work, but also this only would work for some people. Some students get distracted too easily, so studying in groups would not help at all. Asking questions during class time is another failed solution. This one works sometimes, but not everybody has a good teacher to help the students to the fullest extent. Lastly, asking for extra credit is yet another failed solution. Correlating with asking questions asking for extra credit only works if you have a good teacher willing to give you it. Also extra credit can only take you so far.
There’s one thing that works extremely well for everybody. The best possible solution is getting a tutor. Anyone can be a tutor. It can be your teacher, a friend, a family member, a professional, and anyone else you prefer to tutor you. Tutoring can be done at any time too; it’s completely up to you, and whoevers tutoring you. Nothing is better than getting one-on-one help from anyone you want at any time you want. You have full flexibility when it comes to getting someone to tutor you. Tutoring is definitely the solution to students failing math.
Now I’m sure some people think it doesn’t always work, but from personal experience it has. I went from having a D+ to a B just from a week of tutoring. The proof is in the process. Getting a one-on-one tutor gives you alone time with somebody who knows everything about your learning. They show you how to do problems step by step. Unlike a group study with friends when you are being tutored you are less susceptible to being distracted due to the fact that you are normally with a professional. If you have a good teacher they can also be your tutor. You’re set up for success with a teacher as a tutor, because everything they show you is more than likely the information that will be on the tests or quizzes. There are so many benefits to having a tutor. You can work at your own pace when you have one-on-one tutor sessions. You can also have more than one tutor. Most tutors in college are free. Especially at Old Dominion University tutoring is available for everyone There are some paid tutors, which normally are at affordable prices. Many personal friends of mine that were failing are now passing due to them getting a tutor.
After going through many different possible solutions I find one-on-one tutoring is the best one. Again not only can you pick who you want to tutor you, but you can also pick when and where. You can have a professional or even your teacher as your math tutor. Having personal experience of tutoring I know this works. There is no better solution to stop failing math than tutoring.
Reflection: I really just like my title: Math, What’s the solution? It’s kind of a play on words and it catches the reader’s attention. My introduction is also something that brings the reader in. I said some things that most students in math classes can relate to. I think I also did well in the second paragraph. I made it really clear what the problem is, and why it needs a solution. My third paragraph provides numerous failed solutions. In my fourth paragraph I introduce my solution and explain why its good a little bit. I don’t know if I over-explained, but I tried to give good detail. My fifth paragraph I gave numerous reasons why my solution is the best one for the problem. I wrapped everything up with my conclusion. I refer to a few things I said in previous paragraphs in my conclusion. After that I closed it with a good line. I did not use any outside sources for this essay so I have no works cited.
