Many different commands are taught and put to use through the multiple labs that encompasses the learning of this course.

Lab 1 – Create a Virtual Machine

This lab introduced how we’re going to learn and practice Linux through a virtual machine. For this lab the main thing was to install the virtual machine onto our device and load Kali Linux on it.

The lab took a little while due to long loading times, but was very easy. After everything was installed I also learned the first four commands of linux using the command prompt. This lab provided the very foundation that would be used onwards.

Lab 2 – Working with Command Line

This lab taught how to navigate through different dirrectories and files. I learned how to change directories and look into the different content inside each directories like files.

The only struggle I had in this was remembering the some of the arguments like ls to minimize the view of large files which costed me a few points. Overall this taught me how to quickly navigate the systems directories and files and even make them if need be.

Lab 3 – VI Editor

This lab showed the fundamentals of using VI editor as a text editor. I learned how to open files with VI and edit the contents through a multitude of commands.

The main thing that was hard about the lab was the shear amount of commands you first learn. Switching between insert and command mode also was odd too due constantly needing to switch between both where each keystroke will behave differently in each. This lab showed how to edit files effienctly with many different commands to even larger files.

Lab 4 – User and Group Accounts

This lab showed how to manage users and groups within the system. I learned how to add, remove, and changed permissions for both users and groups. It also features how some commands like these need root privledges or in this case sudo.

For the most part this lab didn’t have many difficulties as I already had prior labs that were similer and many of the commands were self explanitory. The only thing that could be a little tricky was remebering the extensions/options for some of the commands. Overall, that lab showed how to properly manage users and groups which is a really important task for administrators.

Lab 5 – Password Cracking

This lab showed how to use a password cracking tool such as john to ripper to automatacially crack passwords. I got practice setting more passwords and users and try the john the ripper tool.

This law was also really easy, but the only small issue was the tool didn’t get that many passwords either due to speed or tike constraint. However, I see how hackers use tools like these to get peoples passwords and why it’s imortant to have a strong password.

Lab 6 – File Permissions

This lab showed how to set permsissions on certain files and prevent others from gaining access. I learned how to use commands like chmod and see how other users interact with files based on the permissions.

My struggle for this lab wasn’t as much the lab itself but my kali instead as some of the command weren’t configuring properly. Even after resets it wouldn’t work leading me to reinstall the machine which did end up fixing my prior issues. Overall, this lab showed how to add layers of confidentiality and security by only giving file permissions to people and groups who actually need access.

Lab 7 – Storage Management

This lab showed how manage different storage systems. I learned from this how to create new virtual disks, partitions, and mount them as well to connect them.

The lab itself was also not super difficult as every change you make you just repeat the same command to verify and explain the changes for the new storage system. This lab shows what it’s like to organize and create storage systems which are always crucial for any database.

Lab 8 – Shell Scripting

This lab showcased how to do shell scripting within linux through text editors/files. I learned how to execute these scripts with different commands like conditonal statements and utilitzing variables.

I would say the thing that made it odd for me was learning the different syntax. Prior to this class I learned how code in python which does feel similer to shell script in linux with similer commands but has a different syntax. Overall, I learned how scripts are an important part of linux to automate the process of running multiple commands to get a desired output.

Linux Systems for Cybersecurity In this course you learn the fundamentals of operating a Linux namely through Kali Linux.
