Cybersecurity in the U.S. vs. South Korea:

There are many differences when viewing the cybersecurity perspectives between diverse countries. This will be the comparison, and contrast, between the United States and South Korea.

Security Framework

The United States follows specific standards and expectations that have been established by the National Institute of Standards in Technology, otherwise known as NIST. Utilizing this foundational framework, we are provided with an organized system to manage and minimize cyber threats and risks. The US government works through clearance systems for overall and important. For example, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This department has high security clearance in order to manage and coordinate protection and security measures. The US also has the CISA, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, to further instill order and coordination.

South Korea features their own set of standards and regulations, those of which are followed in their digital usage and security. This is known as KISA, the Korean Internet & Security Agency, responsible for policy and security measures. Both South Korea and the United States put heavy effort in protecting their, and their citizens, cybernetworks/systems.

Education and Awareness:

In South Korea, there is a larger standard on education and integrating cybersecurity and programs into their curriculum. To both students and the public, they provide and encourage cyber education and training. Many agents of Korea are familiar with the cyber world and how they can protect themselves, including the existence of cyber threats and risks.

The United States, likewise to Korea, values awareness and spreading information regarding the digital world to embark upon. In today’s times, the inclusion of engineering and cyber related topics are increasing within the K-12 levels.

The Scale of Attack:

The scale of attack is the most prominent difference between the two countries. The US faces heavy attack and faces larger risks as it is involved in many global endeavors. While South Korea faces similar challenges, it may be argued that the attacks are on a more regional/local spread than a global take.
