Workplace deviance with Technology:
The introduction and inclusion of cyber technology has created a bountiful amount of opportunity for workplace deviance. The following are some of the ways this deviance may occur:
Social Media This refers to the act of employees defacing or critically commenting on their workplace, coworkers, management, etc. Taking sensitive, or confidential, happenings of the workplace and posting them online, opens organizations to vulnerability and can lead to a larger conflict for both employer and employee. Any post or comment on social media has the potential to damage the reputation of an organization, losing customers and client trust.
Cyberloafing When employees use company resources for their own entertainment or benefit beyond their work description and expectations. individuals may use company resources like the access to the internet to use social media, browse the web, do outside assignments, etc. While this is not always a malicious act, it decreases productivity and wastes company time and resources. This can be closely related to time-theft within a company. Employees using their work time to do things other than work, would be classified under cyberloafing.
Cybersecurity Breach Some individuals seek employment from organizations with malicious intention. This is why the proper vetting and training protocols must be in place to protect against these motivations. Beyond this, employees with higher levels of authorization, may use their access to share privileged information with outside users. Any compromise of information is important for an organization, it shows holes in the security and infrastructure.
Even through these challenges, cyber technology has provided a large number of benefits. At the end of our technological advancements, we will have to learn new and adaptive ways to prevent these forms of workplace deviance. This is a reason why the proper monitoring of system, resources, and employees is a crucial step in creating and maintaining an effective/secure organization or network.
