How do engineers make cyber networks safer:

Engineers play a major role in increasing the safety and security of cyber networks through varying approaches and other diverse strategies/ technologies. Engineers design and implement forms of encryption techniques to protect information and sensitive data transmitted through different networks. By using these techniques, encryption algorithms and protocols, such as Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and Transport Layer Security (TLS), they ensure that data remains confidential and protected from unauthorized access or threats/risks. These things will always lead right back to our cyber foundations, the CIA (confidentiality, integrity, and availability).

More so, engineers develop and utilize intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS) to monitor network traffic in real-time, watching out for malicious activities and potential cyber threats. It is crucial to pinpoint and narrow in on a network’s vulnerabilities. These systems use advanced algorithms and analytics to detect patterns and other suspicious behaviors, providing the opportunity for timely response and preventative measures.

Engineers conduct thorough vulnerability assessments and penetration testing to identify weaknesses and vulnerabilities within networks/systems. Through comprehensive testing methods, they uncover potential entry points and security loopholes that could be exploited by cyber attackers. Cyber criminals are searching for these holes and backdoors just as much, making updates and monitoring even more important. In the end, engineers plan and execute many strategies, such as patch management and system hardening/updating, to reinforce system safeguards and effectively reduce/eliminate risk.

Additionally, engineers play such a vital role in designing and infusing technical access control mechanisms to regulate and manage user permissions and privileges within the network environment. By catering to these techniques like multi-factor authentication (MFA) and role-based access control (RBAC), they ensure that only authorized users can access critical resources and systems, thereby reducing the likelihood of unauthorized access and data breaches. If a network does not have strong security measures and safe accounts/access, then it will likely not be one that is trusted by users and potential users. 

It is important to prioritize ongoing education and training initiatives to keep employees and staff up to date and maintain trustworthy systems. Ultimately, through their expertise, innovation, and dedication, engineers play a pivotal role in making cyber networks safer, thereby safeguarding critical assets and promoting trust in the digital ecosystem.
