My writing growth thus far this semester has been substantial, particularly in certain aspects that pertain to passing the writing sample placement test. Through attending the writing review sessions at the student success center I have learned more methodologies for writing an introduction. After writing the first essay for this class my strategies for 5 paragraph essays has improved, including how I outline before I write. Despite these significant improvements I still struggle with certain aspects of sentence structure. Often when writing I misplace commas or write run-on sentences. Though many of these mistakes get rectified in further revisions, some often make it through and it slows my writing process down. The lessons taught in sentence structure have been majorly beneficial to my grammatical ability. Not only have they been a refresher on concepts learned in high school, but they have also taught me more about punctuation in general. Some of the class aspects that have improved my writing have been the writing review secessions, the peer review, and the editing skills checklist. The writing review secessions have forced me to outline better and create a more cohesive paper in the first draft. The feedback given has allowed me to better focus on correcting writing flaws that wouldn’t be caught in initial revisions. The peer review has given me insight on some of the ways other people write, and how they differ than me in methodology or structure. Having examples of differing technique has been beneficial in diversifying the way I write. Finally, the editing skills checklist has helped me realize the mistakes made in final revisions of my essays and forced me to research how to fix them. Along with forcing me to revisit already finished essays the editing skills checklist has also given me a platform to compare the flaws in previous essays to more recent ones. This gives a map of writing growth through my completion of the course
