Writing for College Success has been an effective class for improving my writing ability and pushing me towards the mold that Old Dominion University wants me to fill. Before attending this establishment, I took the “Writing Sample Placement Test.” A tool designed by the university to evaluate writing structure and grammatical ability in relation to university standards. When I took the evaluation, I decided that entertaining analogies and compelling content were a more important focus than small grammatical errors that could be fixed at any point in revision or utilizing a 5-paragraph structure. However, thanks to this class I have realized the fault in my ways. Now I have learned to focus on the grammar in my essays and fit the content into 5 paragraphs no matter how much useless filler or unimaginative content that takes. The skills I used in high school to deal with writing prompts that forced me to write papers on topics without substance have been retooled for the college setting. University 150 has made me much more proficient at writing about the struggle of the college freshman and my hypothetical preparation if I were to meet with an advisor when in actuality I signed up for classes after getting my hold taken off by an email chain. For me personally, the class has also helped me solidify my decision to major in computer science. Any consideration I had for a liberal arts major prior to the lessons in this class about sentence structure, shift, and dangling modifiers, is certainly gone now. The e-portfolio in university 150 has been a great use of the schools WordPress subscription. It is an easy way to add content to the course. By forcing students to write about the course and how its helping their writing the university can better justify making money off the class. University 150 and the content in it have been very beneficial for my college experience.
