The overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime is significant and increasing. I will discuss a few areas in which they overlap. First is investigation and prosecution. Law enforcement investigates many cybercrimes which range from hacking to identity theft to cyber-terrorism. The investigators must know a lot about cybercrime techniques in order to gather evidence. The next overlap is international cooperation. Since cybercrimes often expand national borders, law enforcement agencies also need to be able to collaborate. The different jurisdictions need to be able to discuss things like investigations and suspects. Another point I will discuss about the criminal justice and cybercrime overlap is cybersecurity measures. Criminal justice agencies need to protect things such as government systems, private sector networks, and critical infrastructure from cyber threats. The next overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime I will discuss is victim support and assistance. Cybercrime affects individuals, businesses, and even communities. Criminal justice agencies can provide support to these victims. They can do this with things such as legal assistance, counseling, and resources for identity theft recovery. The last point I will discuss about cybercrime and criminal justice overlapping is prevention and awareness. Some criminal justice agencies raise awareness about cybercrimes and even educate the public on how to protect themselves from becoming victims of cybercrimes. This can involve awareness campaigns, community outreach programs, and partnerships to best promote good cybersecurity practices. This overlap can relate to other overlaps in this class such as cybersecurity and small businesses. A lot of the overlaps are actually similar to the ones I have just talked about. Many victims of cybercrimes are small businesses. One example is that small businesses also use prevention methods such as the ones above. Also, many businesses teach awareness of cybercrime and how to deal with it to their employees to decrease cybercrime against them.
