Entry #10

Engineers play a crucial role in making networks safer in several different ways that I did not know about before. The first way they make networks safer is through risk assessments and analysis. Engineers assess the cybersecurity risks associated with a network by analyzing potential vulnerabilities, threats, and consequences. This involves conducting comprehensive risk assessments, identifying critical assets, and evaluating potential security gaps that could be exploited by attackers. The next way they make cyber networks safer is through the implementation of security controls. Engineers deploy security controls and technologies to safeguard the network against various cyber threats. This may involve deploying firewalls, detection/prevention systems, antivirus software, secure authentication mechanisms, and encryption protocols to protect data in transit and at rest. The next way is through continuous monitoring and threat detection. Engineers implement monitoring tools and systems to continuously monitor network traffic, log events, and detect potential security incidents or anomalies. This includes deploying security information and event management systems, intrusion detection systems, and endpoint detection and response solutions to detect and respond to security threats in real-time. Engineers also use security awareness training to provide network safety. This helps empower employees to recognize and report security incidents, avoid phishing attacks, and follow security protocols to protect sensitive information and resources. Another way the engineers make cyber networks safer is through secure configuration management. Engineers ensure that network devices, servers, and software applications are configured securely to reduce common security risks and vulnerabilities. This includes applying security patches and updates, disabling unnecessary services, and enforcing strong password policies to prevent unauthorized access and exploitation of weaknesses. Overall, engineers play a critical role in making cyber networks safer by designing, implementing, and maintaining strong security measures, conducting risk assessments, responding to security incidents, and promoting a culture of cybersecurity awareness and resilience within organizations.
