There are both positives and negatives to the advances in computer technology that society has accomplished. The average person uses some sort of computer technology in their everyday lives. From our smart phones, motor vehicles, even our home security systems, computers have created a safer world for us all. One way we can say that computers have made us safer is through the implementation of GPS. We all know that GPS uses satellites to help us navigate and determine our precise or approximate location on earth, which in turn can keep us from becoming lost. GPS is also important to first responders who are responsible for protecting the public when they’re in danger. GPS shortens timelines for how quickly first responders are on scene to save lives.

Computers have also made us safer by way of home security systems. Alarm systems and surveillance cameras are sometimes used by homeowners to monitor their properties remotely and some of the more advanced home security systems have the capability to notify authorities when an alarm has been triggered. Lastly, the technological advances made in the medical field have made us safer. MRI machines, the modern AED… These devices have been pivotal in the medical field and are responsible for saving countless human lives every day.

Computers have also made us less safe in some ways. Now that most organizations use some sort of digital storage for storing our information, people are more likely to become victims of fraud, identity theft and other types of cybercrime. We are less safe due to how we manage our critical infrastructure. Our critical infrastructure, like oil, gas, electric and water companies have become computerized. If one of these critical processes were to be interrupted or compromised by an adversary, the loss of life could be devasting. Lastly, Weapons have become computerized and improved with features like GPS, laser, and other means to ensure precision, and maximize lethality. This has made us unsafe, but what is worse is if weapons like this fell into the hands of those who intend to cause harm to people rather than to protect people.
