Living in a society that is becoming more and more technologically advanced every day, affords us the opportunity to reach new heights as a civilization. Nearly all our information is stored somewhere in the cloud. This gives us ease of access in our everyday lives. This also can leave us vulnerable to those who would like to steal our information for personal gain, which makes it even more important now than ever before to have a proper cybersecurity program. Old Dominion University’s college of Cybersecurity teaches students the ins and outs of cybersecurity, but ODU also offers numerous other majors that relate to cybersecurity, and I will be explaining how 4 other majors relate.

 ODU offers an Information Systems and Technology major opportunity. This major offers students the opportunity to learn about and hone their technical skills regarding computer systems. It is important in this field of expertise to not only know about the system you’re going to be working with, but also to know how to protect those systems. IT systems deal with vast amounts of data. Cybersecurity measures, such as encryption are usually implemented to safeguard sensitive information.

Another degree path Old Dominion University offers is Cybercrime. This one speaks for itself, but to deal with cybercrime, you must understand cybersecurity. They must understand how cyber criminals operate and take advantage of others, often using computer systems. They must also implement cybersecurity measure to protect their systems.

 The last 2 majors ODU offers that relate to cybersecurity are both Engineering majors. They are Engineering Management and Electrical Engineering. Both majors can potentially land you a job in a field that is vital to our society and they both deal with computer systems. A criminal or adversary hacking a company’s systems to steal money or a criminal hacking a power grid can lead to an unfavorable situation. This is why it is important, in nearly every profession to implement some sort of cybersecurity measures.
