I believe that my major relates to cybersecurity by laying out a foundation of what is authorized and what isn’t. In today’s times, it’s often found that many crimes happen online due to hacker activity that can cause harm to the public. As business and government agencies grow, so does the need for cybersecurity specialists due to the need to protect classified information. Without proper security practices, multiple activities can occur which in turn could leak important information to adversaries. This can result in the destruction of important government property and loss of life. For example, certain credentials are given to government employees in order to have access to controlled spaces. To ensure that those spaces stay classified and secured there are practices in place that are followed in order to prevent that space from being compromised. The same is followed for cybersecurity. In classified areas within a business, some computers are wired to classified networks through different wiring and encryption as opposed to the standard work stations. Certain practices that may be implemented could include not allowing plugging unclassified storage devices into these hard drives. These unclassified or unauthorized devices could contain a virus that could be harmful to the network or create an opening for hackers to access the business’s secrets. Other practices can include a common access card that has certain credentials needed to access the hard drives. Now that technology is becoming more advance, many defense contractors, agencies, and bureaus are in need of hiring people with cybersecurity certificates to prevent their adversaries from causing grave harm to their companies. When it pertains to the criminal justice field, almost all of the same security practices apply. This can include maintaining minimal exposure on social media such as when a certain event is happening, where it’s happening, and possible people that will be there. Department of Defense as well as Department of Homeland Security look at both of these fields and because they are both very important in our forever changing world.
