ePortfolio Entry #2

The four majors that I chose that I feel relate to cybersecurity are Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Cybercrime, and Information Systems and Technology.

The reason that I believe Computer Engineering relates so well to cybersecurity is that to implement any sort of cybersecurity programs, or develop new ones in the future, there will need to be people with an intimate knowledge of the computer and its systems. As this major teaches that and provides a solid base for transitioning into more specific fields such as the field of cybersecurity I saw it as a good match as a major.

As for computer science, many of my previous statements hold true for this major as well, the main difference being this major is less focused on the physical computer itself, and more in the digital aspects that are just as necessary for implementing and creating cybersecurity programs. This major is just as suited to a cybersecurity job as someone with a degree in computer engineering would be.

I will admit I looked at this major simply because of the name, as the similarities are obvious, but I wasn’t sure if there would be enough relation to put into this entry. After looking into the major though, it was obvious that there is a huge relation in the degrees since cybercrime majors are not only required to learn about the laws that many cybersecurity systems are put into place to enforce, but also learn about computer systems and cybersecurity systems themselves.

Information Systems and Technology may be a bit of a stretch but I believe that the majors are related enough due to the people receiving this degree will have to become familiar with many of the programs used in a cybersecurity operation. They will need to know how to operate many of the crucial systems used and in doing so I see the relation between the two majors as close enough to include in this post.
