Rank the motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7). Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.
Multiple reasons 1 I ranked this at one simply because the odds of someone doing something with various reasons makes the most sense in something as versatile as hacking.
Entertainment 2 Anyone I know that has gotten into hacking has gotten quite into the challenge and the thrill to it, it becomes a game and hacking simply makes them happy.
Boredom 3 Many people get into hacking due to boredom and after a glance into the world they learn more and more about it and eventually it becomes their hobby that they immerse themselves in to stave off the boredom that opened the door to this activity in the first place.
For money 4 As with anything in this world, people will do something if it gets them money in their pocket and hacking is no different. In terms of crime, it feels safer and simpler to do it in the comfort of your own home, and this is obviously a motivation for many hackers.
Recognition 5 If you are good at something why not show it off? Many people feel this way and those who have this personality, once they reach a certain level of expertise in the hacking world, they will often do it just so people can see that they could.
Revenge 6 Political 7 For both the revenge and political motivations, it is obvious that they are both valid reasons for someone to commit a cyber offense, but the cases of it are lower than someone who does it for fun or to simply get paid. On top of the fact that sentencing for a cyber offense against a government is harsher than against an individual or private business.
