Career paper

The choice of career I would like to cover is the Information Security Analyst, their primary job is to plan and implement security measures in the networks of their parent organization. These companies include standard computing companies, business and security firms, and consulting firms. Alongside this role, they can also be responsible for implementing active defensive measures in their networked system infrastructure which includes firewalls, searching for possible vulnerabilities and blind spots in a system, and be some of the first ones to deal with and investigate potential threats and data breaches. In addition, they can also be responsible for auditing records and performing risk assessments on networked systems to ensure that it is as airtight as possible.

To start I would like to point out some of the fundamental facets and ideas that Information Security Analysts often contend with in their day to day works. I would like to start with social theories with the idea of  Determinism, Objectivity, and Empiricism. To begin with Determinism, it is the idea that almost all events that happen can trace their origins somewhat to previous events that had happened no matter how distant they are. For example, because someone forgot to repair a table leg in time, it would naturally break thanks to extended stresses. This idea also extends to the job of an Information Security Analyst, as they are responsible for investigating potential breach points and review logs, It would only make sense to apply the ideas of Determinism to ensure that as few points of failure can happen in order to both secure systems more fully and be able to pinpoint flaws in the system on the off chance that a security breach does happen and information is lost.

The second social theory that applies to the job is Objectivity, It is characterized by the ability to look at data and events with a clear lens without any sort of bias or preference even for topics the researchers feel strongly about themselves, I would argue that this is an absolutely critical skill that a Information Security Analyst should be able to have, as they are responsible for safeguarding critical information structures in the networks of their employers. They should be able to deliver and receive information to their superiors with little to no personal input from themselves concerning whatever information they had found and had access to. I would also argue that objectivity would also apply in terms of social interactions. As an Information Security Analyst should be able to interact meaningfully with a wide range of people. Each from different backgrounds whether that be culturally or economically.

Finally, the last social science theory that applies to being an Information Security Analyst is the idea of Empiricism. It is the idea of  studying events and behavior through the lens of our senses instead of our mental hunches in order to get rational results that can be verified. I think in the realm of cybersecurity as an Information Security Analyst this would be perhaps the most vital still to have on the job. As assumptions can be made that lead to great data loss and financial consequences for both the company and you, this also extends to suspecting individuals on their motives should they try to attack the networked systems. As assuming the intents and actions of an attacker will lend very poorly to actually defending crucial information and systems.
