E-portfolio Entry #1

  1. Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology?
  2. Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity. (A general search on ODU’s site or on Google)

The reason I am interested in Cybersecurity technology is because I have playing videogames for pretty long time, starting in 2012, when I was 9, I got my first Xbox 360. I loved playing all day after I got home from school. As I got older and so did the games I grew up enjoying security measures and cybersecurity efforts dwindled down. It went from me playing Call of Duty black ops 2 and having a blast to being spawn trapped or DDOSed by older hackers or what we called “script kiddies”. It didn’t occur to me at the time but as I aged and eventually went to college, I realized I could be the person to stop hackers from ruining everyone else’s time. Since I’m still relatively new to the coding and programming world, I understand it may take a while to get there but even if I can write one line of code to help others, I’d feel pretty good about myself and what I chose to do. I actually started off as a computer science major trying to challenge myself and chase the big bucks and it was rough getting into complex math and other required courses. After passing my freshman classes and dropping my coding class I considered something less intense in math but still challenging and interesting enough to enjoy my workload. So far the courses I have taken were pretty eye opening and fun. Every day I may use information I picked up while living on campus my first year. Now, I transferred to the online college of cybersecurity to work and pursue my degree.

There are many majors and disciplines that apply to cybersecurity four majors that relate closely off the top of my head would be Computer Science due to its focus on technology and developmental learning, Psychology because of the mental aspect that pairs with cybercrime and higher-level thinking to effectively use social media platforms and other site to your benefit. Sociology due to the interconnected nature of the internet and how people interact with each other through these mediums on a daily basis. IT management due to the need of understanding things like specific hardware, programming, networking, and operating systems, and finally Cybercrime for trying to understand the nature of the internet and how its assumed veil of anonymity may influence people to do illegal or fishy things on different sites.
