How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?
2. How should we approach the development of cyber-policy and -infrastructure given the “short arm” of predictive knowledge?
Cybertechnology impacts individual users, offenders, and our society as a whole. The most obvious interaction formed due to creation would be the ease of access to targets. Now using the internet offenders can find vulnerable victims to attack from all over the world. The anonymity attributed to the internet also affects the naturality of crime. The internet is large and networked, this means unlike physical businesses the internet never really ‘closes’ this allows a constant connection between offenders and victims. For example, a site you used months ago could’ve stored your information and at a random point an offender can access the saved data the user was told to be secured. One it can help defend against these interactions is by providing mass information and help such as tech support to ward off attackers.
An important way to increase cybersecurity and uphold preventative measure is to be open minded and aware of the behaviors displayed by individuals. This is because the internet is a mirror of its users and their motives, keeping a psychological perspective can be very helpful. An approach that could work is instead of using some current strict guidelines referring to online security, we could transition to more agile and or adaptive frameworks. Doing this will allow us to study and recognize new and emerging techniques to breach security. Collaboration with users is also a good approach but can be a double-edged sword. This is because companies can use open sourcing to allow users to make changes for differentiating personal use. The problem with open source is that although some could put productive code/information into your environment, some can be harmful or malicious code into the network to disturb other users or company operation. In all I think education and collaboration are the most important factors to learning and progressing in certain contexts.
