How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Cyber Technology although essential and resourceful in our daily lives unfortunately creates various avenues for workplace deviance. Workplace deviance can derive from different factors depending on the workplace environment. These factors can include poor management, peer influence, job dissatisfaction, workplace culture, opportunities, boredom, and usually individual factors most commonly lead workers to partake in deviance. Understanding these causes can help organizations better defend their data and prevent internal attacks. Workplace deviance doesn’t have to just be actions that necessarily hurt an organization but also acts that hinder daily functions and processes. For example, many schools across the U.S. used to and may still have rules against the usage of cellular devices on school grounds/in the classroom. At the time it seemed to me that it was a rule in place solely for control. As I got older, I can now see that cellphones in the classroom are not only a nuisance to teachers trying to retain kids’ attention but also in the wrong hands can be weaponized in unnecessary ways. The current accessibility to record a short video and post online without context can hurt the reputation of the school or business you attend if the actions present don’t represent the core values of the area. Other listed forms of workplace deviance can be cyberloafing- or reducing productivity in work due to technological distractions, Cyber espionage- inside workers leaking/altering important information to hinder the company, data breaches, misuse of company equipment, etc. In order to deter these actions, it is vital that companies implement strict IT and cybersecurity protocols and procedures while also making an effort to protect and provide a healthy work environment for employees to flourish. In conclusion, it’s not plausible to assume one entity can stop all deviance occurring in the workplace, all that can be done is to minimize the risks and instill proper work etiquette when using necessary technology.
