Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Reflection
I have been studying Spanish since high school, but as of late I had not spoken it besides infrequently to my father and grandmother, who are both from Spain. Spanish 102 has helped me remember a lot of the important basics that I had forgotten. The preterite tense was the main subject of this semester that I had forgotten. After studying the endings and the irregular verbs and how to properly conjugate for the few weeks that we had covered it in, it all started to come back to me.
Engaging in Communities
In English, give a brief description of the value of, and importance of, engaging in your immediate community and the global community.
Reflect on your experience and participation in these communities. Include artifacts such as photos, audio/video clips, etc.
Interpersonal Communication
In my personal life, my grandmother has Alzheimer’s but her first language was Spanish. She has a hard time comprehending at times, so when that happens either me or my dad will speak to her in Spanish so that she can understand us better.
Presentational Speaking
At the very start of the semester, we had an assignment which was to show talk about members of our families and show some photos of them. They did not have to be real, it was just practice for recognizing when family and your relations were being talked about and how to talk about it yourself.
Presentational Writing
Earlier in the year, we had an assignment to write an advertisement or pamphlet for a club/sports team. I wrote an ad using commands for the soccer team with terms like “Join the team!”
Interpretive Listening
I actually listen to different artists that primarily speak Spanish in their music or a mix of English and Spanish. Such examples are Enrique Iglesias, Sie7e, and a ska/punk band called Ska-P. It is very difficult for me to understand what is being said sometimes depending on how clear the audio is, how much attention I’m paying to the song, and how quickly they speak.
Interpretive Reading
In terms of reading, to help myself learn how to recognize the words in Spanish better, I try and read the news in Spanish. If I have trouble with a word or phrase, I find a site to translate it for me so I can read it easier, and I keep reading.
