ODU boasts a variety of degrees that relate to cybersecurity. From the cybersecurity degree itself to network engineering to degrees such as sociology and psychology. Many degrees can and do have ties in the field of cybersecurity, contributing to the field and science to make it so we have a better understanding. The first degree I would like to touch on is Sociology. Sociology, as described thru the degree page on ODU’s website, emphasizes social welfare and criminal justice. These together help with cybersecurity because it looks at individuals and motives. What does this mean in the scope of cybersecurity? By looking at individuals and motives Sociologists can look at factors such as environment to see why an individual or group might engage in cyber attacks. In line with criminal justice, another degree that ODU offers that ties into cybersecurity are Cybercrime. Cybercrime occupations go with the law enforcement and IT fields. This degree covers criminal justice that was technology related. Laws regarding cyber and computer crime investigation fall into this program, teaching students to be able to recognize those while also acquiring technical skills. These skills include programming, networking, and digital forensics which are the tool kit for students in this program. On the software of cybersecurity, there is a degree in Computer Science that is offered by ODU. this degree helps students become professionals in a large arena that often does affect cybersecurity as a whole. By combining engineering and software development, we are able to reinforce the infrastructure of cyberspace that we use on a daily occurrence. One more degree I’d like to touch on that is offered is Industrial Technology. What makes this so unique is that this works on the technologies that are used in business, industry, education, and government. These are all areas that we want to insure have strong cybersecurity and are enforced and reinforced.
