Journal Entry 8

Watch this video and pay attention to the way that movies distort hackers. Hacker Rates 12 Hacking Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? – YouTube  After watching the video, write a journal entry about how you think the media influences our understanding about cybersecurity

As I watched the video “Hacker Rates 12 Hacking Scenes in Movies and TV,” one thing drew my interest. I have been surprised by how much the media misrepresent cybersecurity. Hackers are often portrayed in films and television programs as brilliant masterminds who can quickly and easily breach any system with a few lines of code (Insider, 2021). However, the reality of hacking is quite different, as the video has demonstrated. Hacking has become more glamorous due to the media portrayal of hackers as rebellious anti-heroes, which has significantly impacted how people view cybersecurity. They have been socialized to think that anyone with some technical know-how can hack and that this activity is excellent. The outcome minimizes the severe repercussions of cyberattacks while oversimplifying the complexities of hacking (Insider, 2021). It necessitates a high degree of aptitude, understanding, and endurance. This challenging and dynamic field necessitates moral and responsible behavior. The idea that all hackers are evil with bad intentions is also supported by how hacking is portrayed in the media. There are definitely malicious hackers, also known as ‘black hat’ ones. At the same time, those engaged in ethical hacking, popularly known as ‘white hat’ hackers, utilize their skills for good by helping companies find and fix system flaws (Insider, 2021). The media often fails to recognize this distinction, which results in a limited and distorted view of such people and their function in cybersecurity. In other words, the media portrayal of hackers has led to a false and inaccurate perception of cybersecurity. People must distinguish between reality and fiction; they ought to exercise critical judgment when watching films and TV shows. The increasing reliance on technology necessitates a deeper comprehension of cybersecurity and a refusal to allow the media to sway public opinion.
