Being a generally successful and wealthy country, the United States faces slightly different cybersecurity risks compared to a lower GDP country like Nigeria. The United States has a plethora of corporations, making them a lucrative target for phishing emails. This is backed up in Alex Kigerls research as it states the United States is the number one target for phishing emails. The attacker does this by pretending to be a trusted employee or anyone who would be authorized to know private information and then obtaining the victim’s credentials. They can then use those to log on and steal information or even money, depending on their goal. Although Nigeria has corporations which means they deal with this risk as well, the United States is undoubtedly a more enticing target for attackers all around the world due to the monetary difference of the United States versus most other countries. Outside of corporations, people in the United States use the internet more than people in Nigeria, making them more vulnerable to email spam attacks as well. Nigeria is notorious for advanced fee fraud, which involves the attacker promising something enticing such as lottery winnings and then charging a “fee” to accept that reward. Businesses usually aren’t affected, but people who are struggling and falsely believe they won the lottery or people that feel that they are in love make susceptible targets for these scammers. Internet usage in Nigeria isn’t as high as it is in the United States. However, people in Nigeria have a higher degree of risk pertaining to personal wellbeing since it’s easier to kidnap victims since they are local, while people overseas are more vulnerable to the monetary aspect. In general many cyberattacks happen from a minority of countries. In conclusion, the United States is targeted more for monetary reasons, while Nigeria and other low income countries are more at risk when it comes to real life danger.
