Over the past 20 years, criminal justice and cybercrime have become increasingly intertwined. Cybercrime has emerged due to the relatively lesser difficulty and higher safety that comes with committing crimes using technology or the internet. Criminology and knowledge of criminal justice is important in the cyber space because it can help identify likely victims and what offenders you should prepare for and expect. Criminology accomplishes this by helping to identify the “why’s” of crime. Although the specifics might vary, many of the crimes committed outside are the same ones that occur over the internet, such as theft and vandalism. However, technology has made some rare crimes more popular and wide-scale, such as the theft of private and intellectual data. Theories like the learning theory are arguably more impactful when it comes to cybercrime as well. The learning theory states that offenders learn how to commit criminal acts from other criminals in a way that is the most effective and that makes the most sense for the offender from a motivation standpoint. There are “Whitehat” hacking tutorials on youtube that can be used for blackhat reasons, and plenty of forums that are semi-hidden on the web that offer tutorials on committing cybercrime, usually on a small to medium scale. These offenders see others success stories further pushing them to participate in these acts. Therefore, criminal justice is also making efforts to increase the severity of cyber offenses. Often, these offenders are never caught making it a lucrative type of crime to be involved in. In order to catch offenders, security experts and law enforcement also have to use digital forensics, which is another overlap of cybercrime and criminal justice. The overlap in these two disciplines is also seen in other areas such as cybercrime and computer science. Cyberattacks often attack the applications made from software development or attackers develop their own malicious software in order to invade the victims computers and networks.
