Senator Kaine’s Internship
One of the most useful batches of experiences I’ve ever received was when I worked at Senator Kaine’s office in Virginia Beach. The people there were enlightened into the ways of menial bureaucracy, which as we all know is what actually makes the cogs of government turn.
I was responsible for coordinating incoming and outgoing cases regarding a variety of governmental issues, some of which included Taxation, Federal Housing, Incarceration, and Gov’t Benefits. I categorized and grouped data points as requested by my superiors on such topics and turned in concise documents containing the summary of said information. In addition to this, I directly communicated with a host of different people of varying backgrounds and temperaments. Which has greatly increased my communication skills in regard to aggravated or disgruntled citizens.
I am grateful for the time and effort that they put into helping me understand what the day-to-day grind was like. It is my highest opinion that in order to effectively change the base of a culture one has to understand what that base goes through daily. It is with this experience that I am confident I can start down the path of learning more about my fellow Americans.
