Learning Style Self-Assessment
On a daily base, I go over my notes for each class I’ve been to each day. I make flashcards for my harder classes such as history, literature, and chemistry. While I’m In class I highlight important things to remember and start the things I need to come back and review because I didn’t quite understand the material. Outside of class, I set a limit of time for each class to go over everything I highlighted or starred. I am doing well in sociology because as my study techniques, I am writing notes on my own and in class. What I mean by writing notes on my own and in class is, my sociology teacher gives homework where you have to read a chapter out of the book and answer questions that go along with it. Instead of me just reading and answering I take the time to write down vocabulary and other material I find might be important so when I get into class I’m basically reviewing what I already have written down. This helps me because I seem to obtain the information better when I read it and hear someone telling/talking about it.

I am currently struggling in my history class. I plan on trying to make friends in the class so we can make study groups as well as making different mini-quizzes to help me know my weak spots. I am planning on spending three to five hours studying in 30-minute increments so my brain doesn’t get overpowered and stop obtaining information. I will span the hours out from Thursday through to Tuesday so the day of class I can focus on what is going to be learned that class. I need to spend more time on the dates of events, people, and maps because those three things are the hardest for me to remember. When I find out that I have an exam I immediately start studying for it and I continue studying until the day of the test for 30 minutes to an hour, it just depends on the time of day. I don’t take enough advantage of all the resources provided. The most I use is my success coach and access advisor. I need to start going to tutoring secessions on topics I’m not one hundred percent confident on and going to my professor’s office hours when I have questions. I often find myself struggling to find motivation then I daydream about my career and pull my act together. Whenever I don’t quite understand something I look it up or ask someone who might know. For example, when answering the question, “ To what extent am I being systematic in my studying of all the material for the exam?”, I had to look up what systematic meant because I couldn’t figure out how to answer the question. That didn’t help so I asked my roommate and we figured it out together. There is material in classes that I still don’t understand so I will go to tutoring places and find people who can help me understand. I made flashcards for my history test and I will continue doing it in the future. I waited to study until the day before believing I would be fine but I was wrong so I will make sure I don’t wait until the last minute to study for the future tests so I can properly prepare myself. I received a 128 out of 150 so I got a majority of them wrong and my teacher didn’t inform us of the correct answers but I personally feel like I second-guessed myself on questions and the first answer I choose was correct. I looked over the following tips: Overcome procrastination, Note-taking, and in-class skills, remembering, writing papers, and assertive communication. I am going to try and abbreviate my noted and write major points to keep me from getting behind and writing unnecessary things as I learned from the tip article, “ Note Taking and In-Class Skills”. I am going to stop procrastinating outside of class when it comes to homework by putting the easy assignments first, take a break then work on the hard assignments to keep my priorities straight make go to an environment where I have no distractions. This will help me better understand the material because it will give me time to obtain the information and not rush at the last minute to get things done
