Mid-Semester Reflection
Study Habits
- Usually for my chemistry class I spend about 4 hours a week studying as well as doing my homework outside of class, for my history class I try to spend a minimum of 6 hours studying each week because I tend to have trouble remembering stuff in that class, for my sociology class I spend about 4 hours each week studying by going over past notes and doing the extra credit assignments he gives us for each chapter, for my chemistry lab I rarely study because the class is basically just experimenting so there aren’t many materials to study and for my literature class I spend about 3 hours each week studying because we mostly just analyze stories but when we do take notes I make sure I read over them and make sure I know them. I need to spend more time studying for chemistry especially because we are not really doing high school review anymore so we’re learning things I’ve never heard of before and I’m not really understanding all of the material. I normally study in my room once all my classes are done but in between my classes, I often go to the library or web center to study. I tend to always get distracted when I’m studying, doesn’t matter where I’m at or what time of the day. To remove distractions when I’m studying, I could put my phone out of sight and reach so I don’t feel the need to look at it and when I go to library and web center find a quiet place to do my studying instead of in the center of all the attention. I study in the afternoon after all my classes are over and I’m not doing anything. For the most part, I stay focused and alert but sometimes I do get tired so I just try to study earlier the next day.
Learning Style - For me I find that flashcards and reading over my notes is the best studying technique for me. For chemistry and history, I use flashcards to help me study. Throughout the week I make them and I use them to study right before a test. While for Sociology and literature I just read over my notes throughout the week and right before a test or quiz. I have tried to type out my notes using specific templates and it doesn’t work for me so I’m currently trying to search for different techniques that work for me.
Transition to College - College so far is something like as I saw it. I expected myself to be managing my time better and that’s not going to well but I expected myself to be independent and classes to be tougher and I was right about that. I really thought I would have gotten my schedule down packed by now but I seem to be having trouble and I didn’t realize how much I would actually need to study. I thought it would small studying like in high school but boy was I wrong. The toughest challenge with moving away would have to be relying on myself to remember everything I have to do. I used to have someone such as a teacher or family member reminding me to do something. So far the easiest challenge to overcome is being alone. At first, I wasn’t a fan of not having a family member with me like how it used to be but I’ve started liking my independence and not having to ask permission to do things.
Connecting to Campus - So far the toughest challenge I have encountered academic wise is understanding everything I am being taught. I wasn’t understanding concepts I felt I should be so I went to a tutoring secession and it kind of helped me but I feel if I keep going to these secessions I will understand it even more. I have had a lot of help from so many different people. To start off, me and my roommate are always helping each other out with homework and even other issues. Also, I often go to my peer mentor for questions about an organization I am in and I ask for scholarship assistance through my access advisor. Lastly, I ask my RA when it comes to questions about food places and whether things are open or not. No, I haven’t attended an interest meeting for a club but I did join the Student Nursing Association. I haven’t been to a meeting this year yet because they’ve only held one and I hadn’t joined yet but I joined the organization so I could meet students who have already gotten into the program I am trying to get into and so I could have volunteer opportunities.
