For my parallel major I have chosen dental hygiene. I choose this as my parallel major because it is fascinating watching the before and after of dental visits. If I were to become a dental hygienist, I would still be able to have one on one contact with patients. Some interesting facts about this major include having a variety of career opportunities as a clinical practitioner, educator, researcher, administrator and so many more opportunities, having many working opportunities with only a bachelor in dental hygiene such as careers in primary or secondary schools, administrators, etc. and having career opportunities in the community, government , and even worldwide organizations. One career I could do as a dental hygienist is become a clinical practitioner. A clinical practitioner provides diagnostics, preventive, restorative, and therapeutic services directly to the public. If I was to become a dental hygienist, I would need to complete the perquisite courses at Old Dominion University then get into the Bachelor of science program for dental hygienist. Once I have completed getting my bachelor’s degree I will be able apply to become a clinical nurse or I can go to dental school and become something higher or even go on to receiving my masters degree. In order to apply for the BSDH program I would need to complete one oral communication class from four options such as public speaking, acting one, voice and diction, and introduction to interpersonal communication. I would most likely choose the public speaking class because I feel it could benefit my career in the long run. Also I would need to complete one class out of the category information and literacy. This category includes classes such as digital literacy, computer literacy, introduction to information literacy and research, etc. I would choose introduction to information literacy and research so I can learn more about literacy before I dive into the harder courses. Out of the nature of science category I will need to take two classes out of the twenty-nine offered. I would choose general biology one and two because when the representative from dental hygiene came to talk to us she told us how she had to go back to take those course to go to dental school. I will also need an impact to technology course and philosophy and ethics which is also needed for the Bachelor of science for nursing. When looking to gain professional experience for dental hygiene I can go to career development services to find volunteer opportunities in this field and also try to see if there’s advanced education that I could invest in, in order to start working in the dental hygiene field. If I was 100 percent interested in changing my major to dental hygiene I would meet with Tara Newcomb to see what actions I need to take and how to prepare for the change.
