How do engineers make cyber networks safer?

Engineers incorporate security principles and practices into the design of network infrastructures and systems. They do threat modeling, consider security requirements, and implement robust security controls from the ground up. When engineers integrate security into the design process, engineers can create a solid foundation for network safety.

A common practice of network segmentation is a technique that divides networks into smaller, isolated segments. This helps contain potential security breaches, restrict unauthorized access, and limit the impact of attacks. Segmentation can be achieved through different methods, one of the most common is VLANs or Virtual Local Area Networks. Others include firewalls and access control policies.

Engineers conduct thorough security assessments, penetration testing, and vulnerability scanning to identify weaknesses or vulnerabilities within the network infrastructure. This helps to ensure that potential security gaps do not go unnoticed and allows for proactive measures to be taken against them BEFORE they are exploited.

What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

The overlap is where these two fields intersect, where criminal justice principles, practices, and frameworks are applied to cybercrime. Understanding the motives and behavioral patterns of cybercriminals is vital for investigating and preventing cybercrimes, this overlap with psychology is one of the main focuses of this class.

Ethics provides a framework for examining the moral principles and values that guide cybercriminals. Using this framework, we are able to discern what is considered a cybercrime and what is not. This promotes fairness and justice within the system which also shapes legal and policy frameworks. When faced with complex situations that involve cybercrime, ethics help us to evaluate the potential consequences, weigh the moral implications, and make decisions that are sound and justifiable.
