What are the connections between the disciplines addressing entrepreneurship at ODU?

To be a good entrepreneur does not equate to being in a particular field of study. A good entrepreneur requires you to tap into multiple disciplines to increase creativity and competence when looking at and solving problems. Another way to look at this is that when using different disciplines in addressing entrepreneurship problems they can help close the information gaps that other disciplines cannot close alone. Different disciplines look at and solve problems differently such as scientists would choose to use math or experiment’s whereas artists might use drawings or music to help flush out answers to problems. The connections are the difference between the fields that makes it a good thing to use in an entrepreneurship.

Is entrepreneurship an art or science?

I do not believe that you can specifically categorize entrepreneurship as either an art or a science. I consider this free enterprise activity as more of a process that can apply both the disciplines of science (math, psychology, etc.) and art (advertisements) to help identify a consumer need (or want) and putting those inventions into the hands of the buyers for profit. I think that an entrepreneurship is better categorized as an activity that exercises all the disciplines (art, science, English, math, business, etc.) to help sell or create a positive buzz about their products.

How is failure good?

Failure is an essential part of learning and has a positive influence on the development of plans, projects, or even your own personal growth. Failure can help strengthen already known or develop many things such as: better develop analytical and critical thinking skills by allowing you to adjust the way you ponder about problem solving; identify strengths and weaknesses by discovering what you do and do not know; offers a change in perspective when you get them wrong which allows you to try to solve the problem in another matter; can teach patience and perseverance; and can unlock other opportunities you did not know existed prior; and can provide answers to questions you did not know existed.

What have I learned from failing?

I have learned quite a few things from my failures. My failures have taught me about myself by highlighting my strengths and weaknesses; showed me things I needed to work on in my personal relationships and life; failure encouraged me to improve myself to be kind and generous to others; built my resilience to the fear of failure to where I embrace it; and helped me learn to reflect on the lesson learned from my failures.

What ethical issues might arise related to what I am working on?

I would say that ethics in business is setting the moral standards (right and wrong) for your business. This is better thought of as the outlining of acceptable and unacceptable behavior standards through a framework of honesty, integrity, responsibility, respect for others, and fairness. Examples of ethical issues that could arise in the business I am currently working on is making sure that the company refrains from unethical accounting (hiding or skimming money), my employees are free from harassment (racial, sexual, etc.) or discrimination (race, sex, religion, etc.), employee do not steal the business intellectual property, make sure to pay fair wages to my employees, and to make sure that if any unforeseen legal issues arise that the business retains a respectable lawyer to help guide us to work within the framework of the law.
