How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
Today with so much technology being used in the workplace, it is apparent to see that deviance behavior continues to happen and that is because information stored online is a lot easier to lose through someone with the wrong intent. Workplace deviance happens when an individual or a group of people have the wrong intentions and cause harm towards their work force. This can mean disclosing unauthorized information, selling personal information, or simply not doing your job. There are many ways people can partake in deviance behavior and one example is when an employee has access to view certain information or gets into authorized locations and abuses their power. This causes harm to the company and could cause a bad reputation towards them. Opportunities for workplace deviance through cyber technology doesn’t always mean that it has to happen online. Insider trading is a perfect example of this and how easily information can be passed upon. Insider trading is when an individual or group of individuals from an organization takes information for their own personal use and/or sells the disclosed information. With most information being stored online and having to use passwords it is obvious to say that many people with the wrong intention use this to their advantage by recording their digital fingerprints and gaining most of their access that way. Simply not doing your job is another example that can be classified as workplace deviance. Cyberloafing is the term used when describing individuals that use the workplace internet and computers for their own personal use which can include playing games, watching unrelated work videos, shopping, etc. This is considered workplace deviance as it is going against the norms that workplace has and is impacting the quality and quantity that the workplace produces which would harm their profits. Workplace deviance is a choice, not something that happens accidentally. Cyber technology can only create workplace deviance if individuals have the wrong intention when using the organization’s tools.
