How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?
With technology advancing before us and criminals finding new ways to have deviant behavior, the interaction between offenders and victims has forever changed. Before there was any special advanced technology, people were told they were going to have some type of deviant behavior by their bloodline or by the environment in which they grew up in. When people think of traditional crimes they tend to think about robberies or willful homicide. When a person gets robbed they are left with the feeling that it could happen again at some point in their life so typically they are scared to walk alone anymore. A cybercriminal can have the same type of impact on a person or to a company and cause serious damage. If a cybercriminal was to make their way into a network and steal data from a company and then sell it for profit, that is still considered a criminal offense and robbery in which you can still be punished with prison if caught. Many people are unaware of the damage and harm that hackers can cause if they manage to steal your information. More awareness of this needs to be spread as people are becoming victims to offenders and do not even realize it until it’s too late. Main reason people don’t realize until it’s too late is because people are unaware of the ways hackers can steal your information. Most people don’t know what phishing emails are, how to check to see if their computer has viruses on it, or what to do if they know they got hacked. If a company has a bad reputation for falling under traps from offenders, they need to do a better job at teaching cyber security and the practices to ensure that they don’t continue to fall for these trips and know what to look out for and potentially stop the threat. WIth technology advancing, we are only going to see a rise in cyber crimes if not more than face to face crimes which can be more damaging than face to face crimes as most people have most of their important information stored online.
