Journal entry #4

Cyber-attacks come in all shapes and forms such as phishing, malicious malware, misuse of confidential information, ransomware, data leakage, and many more. Companies should already be aware that individuals are trying to steal their information at any given moment and should have a set of practices to ensure their information and data is secured properly, not doing so can lead to a loss of trust and a bad reputation against that company. When looking up where in the world cyber threats happen the most, the US is said to have the highest cybercrime rate in all of the world. Now when you put a lot of thought into this, it makes sense. The US has high availability of broadband connections that can lead to people around the world at any given place to breach a system. Even though we take these sorts of things into consideration, that does not change the reasoning as to why an individual is trying to breach a system whether that’s in the US or somewhere in China. The main thing that people tend to focus on when it comes to cyber-attacks is how to stop/prevent them. People have different reasons when it comes to breaching systems and the location of the system won’t stop them from whatever it is that they are trying to steal. People have different reasons when it comes down to hacking whether that be for personal use, to sell, harm a business reputation, or destroying data and most risks everything and know they will have to deal with the consequences but still choose to do so. Causing a cyber-attack to any company or individual around the world will have the same damage no matter where you are, once you’re in the system, you’re in. The main thing to remember is how you are going to get back information, how to prevent further breaches, and if a company is in jeopardy. Places like China are limited to how much internet they can use and what they can access unlike the US where most of the internet is open to the public and are given the free will to do what they choose as long as they follow the rules and ethical practices. The differences between places like the US and China are that people’s intent of hacking can be different but most of the time they are the same and the reasoning behind what they are trying to achieve.
