Journal entry #11

1. What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

In the society we live in today, technology continues to advance beyond our imagination and the same goes for crime. People are committing crimes through the internet rather than doing it in person because in most cases the crime would be easier to get away with. With crimes going on through the internet and people stealing all sorts of information it is easy to see the overlap between the two; cybercrime is just a crime that’s been committed through the internet. Not everyone realizes that you can still commit crimes through the web, such as the dark web for example. On the dark web, people do all sorts of illegal acts such as selling weapons, credit card information, identities, and worse. Another illegal act that many people tend to do on the internet is watch pirated movies. Pirated movies are movies that have been recorded and posted on the internet for others to view without having to pay. You can still get caught up with the criminal justice system through these acts and get sentenced to serve jail time even though none of the illegal acts committed were in person. The dark web itself is difficult to get your hands on and that itself should be all the evidence you need to know whatever it is you’re doing is illegal. But people are much more comfortable committing crimes behind their computers as it is easier to get away with and you can technically do this anywhere as long as you have the internet. Cybercrime doesn’t always happen virtually though; it can happen through physical form as well. An example would be if someone was to get their hands on unauthorized information with a hard drive and either sell it or keep it for their own personal use which would be considered stealing and is against the law. An even better example showcasing how criminal justice and cybercrime relate to each other would be Blackhats, hackers that steal information from people or companies and can get charged in court if they are found responsible. These types of crimes will be talked about more as these types of crimes are only increasing, more colleges and workplaces will have cyber security taught knowing that they are on the rise.
