Cybersecurity has a huge presence in many other majors here at ODU. Criminal Justice, for example, goes hand in hand with cybersecurity. With the growing rates of crimes carried out on the internet today, it is necessary for the criminal justice system to be well equipped for all potential cyber attacks. That’s where cybersecurity comes in. Having information and data security helps prevent future malicious attacks and identify threats before issues arise. There is also a whole department in the criminal justice systems with experts in cyber forensics for when security breaches do occur.

Another major that is heavily related to cybersecurity is computer science. Coding, system security, and web development are all recurring themes and learning points within these two majors. Cybersecurity is a more specialized segment with computer science being a much more broad topic.

Information systems and technology is also a major that is intruded by cybersecurity. “An information systems manager focuses on a company’s network efficiency, making sure that computerized systems and online resources are functioning properly.” Where this coincides with cybersecurity is when there are vulnerabilities within a network that must be addressed. Setting up and maintaining an effective network means that you also need an effective way to ensure safety. 

Lastly, Philosophy is another field that comes to mind when thinking about cybersecurity. As compared to the other majors I’ve talked about so far, philosophy relates to cybersecurity in a more ethical sense. Within the world of cybersecurity, you come across hacking, which you need to constantly ask yourself about what is right and wrong.

In this new age of technology, almost any major you dive into will use the internet in some way, shape, or form. Whenever the internet is added into the equation, cybersecurity will always play a part in keeping your personal information safe.
