Final Reflection

Your First Semester

  • Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.

I have grown in many ways from the beginning of the semester until now, but one area of growth that stands out the most is my independence. Learning to live on my own and be responsible for all things regarding myself was a new and refreshing experience.

  • What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.

I expected this year to be kind of hectic and hard to adapt to. This semester’s experiences partly met my expectations because it wasn’t hard to adapt but it was a little hectic especially near the end when finals were starting.

  • What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?

Something I wish I knew 14 weeks ago is to study and do homework after every lecture so that I retain the information better.

Study Habits

  • How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?

I spend about an hour to an hour and thirty minutes studying for my classes now vs at the beginning of the semester where I spent about 30 minutes studying.

  • How have your study habits changed?

I have changed my study habits by devoting a set time for studying after I get all my work done. I also incorporated ways of minimizing distractions around me by turning off notifications on my phone during study time, and listening to music to limit outside noise.

  • Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.

A resource that I have used this semester to help me with next semester is Quizizz. Quizizz is kind of like kahoot in the sense that it is a quiz website where you can create multiple choice quizzes. This is a good tool to use for studying because it allows you to test your knowledge on what you know and increase your knowledge on what you don’t.

  • What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?

Next semester I will continue to use Quizizz and study for at least an hour or more while limiting my distractions.

Health Professions Learning Community

  • This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
    • On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which  these courses are tied together.

Although I was not enrolled in any of the classes listed above, I was enrolled in PSYC 201S which is another health professions learning community class. I feel like that class was tied to this class because during some lectures my teacher would mention different career paths you could take with the topic being discussed. For example, during the lectures on biology and the brain in relation to psychology, my professor talked about how a career in neuroscience would explore this topic. Additionally, some of the appendices I was assigned talked not only about careers in healthcare through psychology but also gave general advice on how to pick a fulfilling career.

Parallel Plan

  1. This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
  • Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?

Two majors that I would be interested in are nuclear medicine and the assistant pathology graduate program. I am interested in nuclear med because I think I would enjoy performing the tests that the techs do and then determining a diagnosis through imaging. I am interested in the assistant pathology graduate program because I find pathology interesting and it is a very hands-on career.

  • What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?

The benefits of having a parallel plan in place, is the ability to switch to the other plan in the case that something goes wrong with your original plan or you are no longer interested in the original plan.

  • How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?

Both of these majors could benefit my intended major because they are both based in a hospital and lab care setting which my intended major is also in. They also use some of the same skills like hand dexterity, attention to detail, communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and more that will help with my intended major.
