The past narratives and storylines have brought the series to a point where expectations are at a high level for viewers who watch The Walking Dead. The spinoffs of The Walking Dead are typically compared to each other in terms of how they use the characters within the narrative and how strong the narrative itself is. The spinoffs that are typically put against each other are Dead City, Daryl Dixon, and The Ones Who Live. Using YouTube review videos and interacting within the comment section, viewers of The Walking Dead: Dead City see Season 2 as a disappointment. They also mention that the season finale is not really a finale. Some viewers state that the Season 2 finale did not feel like a true ending, and that Negan’s character may be too complex for the writers of Season 2 to build a strong story around. The general consensus among The Walking Dead: Dead City viewers is that there are small moments of entertainment within the series, but the idea of the show being renewed for another two seasons would be difficult for many of them to watch.

The audience’s views, in comparison to my narrative analysis of The Walking Dead: Dead City, show that viewers expect the battles between Maggie and Negan to happen, but the predictability is starting to feel repetitive in the eyes of the audience. Jerry, a notable critic of The Walking Dead, states that the storyline has boiled down to a simple idea: if the writers are going to kill Negan, then they should just do it. The ongoing conflicts between Maggie and Negan seem to be played out, and in Jerry’s opinion, it is clear that the writers are running out of options. The producers of The Walking Dead: Dead City have given some hope to the audience by bringing in new writers for Season 3, since the writers for Season 2 did not meet the level of expectations that viewers had. Seth Hoffman, a veteran of The Walking Dead, will be taking over as the showrunner. The Dead City audience cannot understand how the previouswriters could struggle with a storyline centered around Maggie and Negan in the city of Manhattan, especially considering the strong background story that these characters already have.

Another topic from the audience that ties back to my narrative analysis is the scenes in The Walking Dead: Dead City where Negan is seen acting as his nomal self by committing the horrific actions that viewers have seen before. In the comments of another YouTube reviewer’s video, some subscribers state that they wish there were more clips of Negan utilizing Lucille. Lucille is the bat that Negan uses as his go-to weapon. This connects to a point that Jerry Tate made when he stated that you can have the best actors in the world, but if the writers cannot create a script that matches the level of the acting, then the media will still fail. Under Jerry Tate’s comment section, viewers state that the spinoff was not created to tell a strong story, but rather to keep the name of The Walking Dead franchise alive.

The audience also argues that the Season 2 finale was pointless and meaningless. They say that the episodes leading up to the final episode of Season 2 contain a lot of dialogue and narrative moments that could have been left out. For example, Gamma’s fake death did not create any real change or impact on the narrative, so viewers question why it happened in the first place. Another example mentioned by viewers is Maggie’s repeated failed attempts to kill Negan, which many in the audience describe as cringeworthy. Many viewers say they are unsure what could happen next in the narrative, and some claim that the only possible outcome they can imagine is Maggie and Negan eventually living peacefully, possibly farming together or forming some type of love story. However, the majority of viewers argue that this direction would not create a strong or compelling narrative for the series.

TWDExplained. “Dead City – News – Renewed for Season 3 – New Showrunner! – The Walking Dead.” YouTube, uploaded Aug. 2025, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45ujD3TZbZM

MOVIEidol. “My HONEST THOUGHTS On The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2.” YouTube, uploaded Aug. 2025, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_xUAkPa70s

Jerry’s Takes. “Dead City Season 2 Was an Embarrassment.” YouTube, uploaded July 2025, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPgnDYOOQv4

Through the years of production, The Walking Dead has developed a fan base that wants to see the media succeed.
