Introduction :

In this scholarly article, the author Raed S.A. Faqir, American University in the Emirates, discusses how digital criminal investigations in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has caused a drastic change in how law enforcement approaches arresting, sentencing, and identifying patterns.

Social Sciences :

This article relates to the principles of social science due to how law enforcement handles direct AI crimes. Some social science principles such as regulation and societal impact are related to AI criminal investigations. Faqir (2023), states “The integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data into law enforcement has revolutionized evidence extraction, suspect identification, and digital crime detection”. AI has changed how law enforcement regulates investigations and procedures.

Research Analysis :

Within this scholarly article, the stated study focuses on an ‘attempt of an in-depth analysis of the alignment of AI tools with established frameworks, and how this alignment impacts the pursuit of justice, and whether such AI advancements would help in the criminal investigations of cybercrimes’. The types of research methods used are qualitative research, descriptive analysis, and analytical research. There is an analysis on existing forensic investigation, regulation, law, and focused on how the integration of AI would impact. There is also a study about ‘Automated Robot Models’ on how robotic automation can help collect data and identify patterns related to investigations.

Concepts :

This study can help with the challenges that law enforcement face, and how AI can be used to assist in criminal investigations. This can benefit society as a whole, including marginalized groups, by the use of a system (AI) that has no previous bias.  In module 9, there is an importance on developing a cybersecurity culture. The implementation of AI within law enforcement is a change that can allow law enforcement to immerse themselves more in a cybersecurity culture that they may not be in.

Conclusion :

This scholarly article shows how the use of AI can be used to benefit law enforcement, and the process and procedures of investigations. The authors study shows real life examples and models of how certain processes were able to prove the use of AI in being able to automate processes and how it can AI in identifying patterns, data, and forensics in an investigation. This can benefit all of society in helping catch criminals by a faster, more automated investigation process.
