The two different economic theories that I believe relate to this letter are Rational Choice and Marxian economic theory.

Rational Choice Theory – The platform provider that the company was using did not have adequate cybersecurity services and technology installed to prevent this sort of cyber-attack from happening which was a conscious choice on their part to maximize profits by minimizing their budget for cybersecurity.

Marxian Economic Theory – The perpetrators that committed the cyber-attack stole information pertaining to the customers of the company which is what this theory is all about. Those in power exploit those without power. That is exactly the case here.

By utilizing social sciences theories, we can determine the motivation behind the cyber-attack and perhaps the reason the cyber-attack was able to take place to begin with.

Perhaps the theory we could use is the neutralization theory. The perpetrators rationalized stealing all of the information that they did with the understanding that they weren’t physically hurting anyone. Only financially.

We can also use behavioral theories as well. Perhaps the employees of the platform provider were careless with the passwords they used, and someone was able to gain access to the system through their account, thus enabling the malware to be downloaded onto the servers. This could very well be the reason that so much information was stolen.
