Although it was unfortunate we couldn’t meet in person, I thought the Virtual Summer Institute went really well. I was able to attend quite a few sessions and learned a lot of new things about the MLIS program. Here are some highlights from my perspective…
I attended Dr. Kimmel’s Information & Advising Session which answered quite a few program / course questions that I had. I thought the info she shared on making sure you have a good grasp on when specific classes are offered is something that is very important for those of us who have a specific deadline for when we want to graduate.
Dr. DiScala’s session on e-portfolio’s was quite informative. Although, I started working on mine last semester for LIBS 608, his session really clarified what the goal of the e-portfolio is and also how to access technical help. I thought the examples he shared really put things into perspective.
I thought both the resume session and new school librarian panels were helpful and also gave us quite a few additional resources to use…things I was unaware of prior to the summer institute. Finally, the Internship Q & A with Dr. Burns was great! I learned so much and again, it really clarified the process and options. I am personally excited to learn more about the international internship for next summer.
Overall, I had a great learning experience and it was fun to have so many peers get together. I wasn’t able attend the student organization session, but I plan to watch the recording and also read the blogs of those who attended. I definitely want to get more involved.

I was unable to attend the session with Dr. Burns. After reading about how helpful you found it, I will definitely be watching the recording. Learning about different options would be really helpful in deciding what sort of internship I may get the most out of it. I am glad you enjoyed the Institute, I did too!

Kate-
Like Claire, this encourages me to go back and watch the Internship Q&A with Dr. Burns that I missed on Thursday. I’d put it on my mental to-do list and then promptly forgotten, so I’m very glad you mentioned it in your reflection! The student organization session was fun (we did virtual scavenger hunt;) and well worth watching as the current board was able to talk about what they’ve already accomplished and really encourage those of us who are newer to the program to get involved.

I also found the resume information very helpful. As it changes over time, what we knew before and what got us our current jobs might not be helpful in the future.
