SPAN 101

Exploring Culture

When exploring new cultures, I try to keep an open mind and understand different beliefs, ways of living, and roles in society. One of the best resources that have helped me gain a better understanding of Latin and Spanish-speaking cultures are some of my closest friends. Many of my closest friends are from Latin or Spanish-speaking families, and these friendships have allowed me to have a first-hand exploration of their culture. Some products that have allowed me to learn more about Spanish Speaking cultures are language apps such as Duolingo and even YouTube. These resources allowed me to understand how Hispanic cultures have varying family values and societal standards.

Overall, these friendships and resources have enabled me to see and appreciate cultural differences between myself and Spanish Speaking individuals. These practices and products helped me have a better understanding of Latin and Spanish Speaking cultures in a variety of ways. I was able to experience different family standards, the more collective societal living, as well as traditional culture, such as celebrations. On a more lighthearted note, I also learned more about food, music, and even orientation to time. Throughout this course, learning more about this culture has allowed me to see how different cultures can lives very similarly, with each having its own unique perspective and way of living.

Engaging in Communities

Communities would not be able to thrive without support and leadership. Engaging in the local community is monumentally important and provides an opportunity for growth not only in yourself but the community member around you. Communities can provide countless benefits, such as support, social connection, as well as a sense of belonging with others. Being involved with the global community can be even more beneficial and important. Learning about new cultures and supporting other cultures can be very rewarding. While enrolled in Spanish 101, I have learned more about the importance of community, especially in Latin and Spanish-speaking countries.

Presentational Speaking

In my beginning Spanish class, I completed activities on FlipGrip which allowed me to record conversations in Spanish. This program allowed me to practice speaking Spanish in a conversational style.

For the first FlipGrid assignment, I was nervous because I knew my peers and professor would be able to see my work. After practicing and creating a script for me to study from I became more confident to record the conversation. This presentational style speaking assignment helped me overcome some of my hesitations about speaking in Spanish. I now feel more comfortable presenting and recording in Spanish, as long as I take the time to study and rehearse.

Interpretive Listening

After being in Spanish class for a few weeks, I found that my interpretive listening had become stronger. I am more able to understand someone who is speaking Spanish. Our Lingro learning activities helped improve my interpretive listening through all of the activities I completed.

While out in public or with some of my Spanish-speaking friends, I am now able to translate what is being said around me. By using my knowledge from class and the use of conjugates. There are still some challenges, but each situation allows me to grow and improve my listening skills.
