Study Habits
College has been quite a journey. I am doing well in most all my classes except for Algebra and Biology. The other classes are going well because they are fairly simple and the course work is not too hard. I am doing decent and still have good grades in Algebra but I am very much struggling in biology. I already knew I would need a little assistance in both math and science. I have made some changes to do better like studying more, asking classmates for help when needed, asking questions, and putting more time into homework and studying. Although I a struggling I just gotta keep my head up and keep on moving
Transition to College
I did not have too many expectations for college. I was just going with the flow. When coming to college I knew it would be hard and a lot of work but it is so much more work than I originally thought. I also did not realize there is always something going on and it is a lot to keep track of. I definitely did not realize I would change my major midway through. I really thought I knew what I wanted. I am struggling a little to keep up with everything but I’m figuring it out. One challenge is definitely being a commuter. I find out about events at the very last minute so I can not usually go to too many. It is hard to attend my peer mentor study sessions because I work and I have to be home alot so it is definitely going to take a lot to get used to and a lot more time on campus.
Major
I did not realize it was so normal to change majors and I did not think I would be one of those people to change their major. Because I went in knowing exactly what I wanted to but then I found out about Occupational therapy and Recreational therapy. I just recently changed my major to Recreational Therapy. I had never even heard of it until a couple days ago. It is very interesting though to work more with mental and physical than just physical. Taking normal activities and trying to make them fun or trying to take someone in a wheelchair and let them play basketball. I am very happy with my decision to switch from exercise science to Recreational therapy because I am excited for it to be more psychology based. I feel as if this is where I belong and I will be so much happier.
Connecting to Campus
One problem I ran into at the beginning, and it is slowly getting better is my procrastination because I am becoming more determined and also talked with an academic success mentor. Since I am struggling with Biology, I am going to attend tutoring sessions. I am very happy with my advisor for helping me change my major, supporting me, and even bringing it up. I feel like I will be a lot happier just because of her. I have also made a couple of good friends who have helped me this semester and ODU is starting to feel like a home. Whether it will be helping with work, hanging out ot de stress, being my partner in a project and even helps to see others struggle with the same things as you. I have not been to any club stuff, but I plan to look more into study abroad because I would like to go somewhere fun over the summer to gain experience.
