Helping Skill 3

The use of active listening if done correctly is rewarding to creating connections. Trying to focus on one girl at a time was difficult since many wanted my attention at the same time. I respectfully told the girls that I was not focused on to wait a second so I could actively listen to one at a time. Another reason why I used this skill was the language barrier. Even though Jamaica is an english speaking country they have their own slang language. They also speak faster than I am used to in the United States so quite often I had to ask them to repeat what they said in order to hear correctly. I wanted to respect each of the girls by giving them my undivided attention and this was important to me personally. I was very interested in what they had to say and wanted to answer any questions that they might have about my own culture. Another part of active listening is to listen and not speak while they were speaking. I did not interrogate them either.
