The last helping skill that I put into action was being empathic. I did not offer any advice or tell them what they should do in their situation but I did provide empathic responses. I remember do remember one response that I gave to a girl talking about a certain experience. I said, “I can’t imagine how that must have been for you but it must have been hard.” I did not want to reassure any of the girls since I did not know their situations personally and I was not in their lives. I also did not want to respond with advice which is based on my own culture and personal experiences since they were apart of a different culture that had different cultural norms and had experiences that I may not have had. This is important to me since I did not want to give advice or cause any of the girls to do or say something out of character due to my words. Due to the difference in cultural traditions and norms I did not want to respond to them in a way that would be offensive.
