Parallel Major

  • I am choosing a degree in a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Early Childhood Education (BS).
  • I am choosing Early Childhood Education because I think teaching will be a good fit for me. I love children and at my old job, I taught kids arts and crafts part-time. I think this is actually what I plan on doing with my life because I have decided medical is no longer right for me.
  • According to thinkprogress.org, some fun facts about Early Childhood Education are 1. “Preschool can help combat crime, teen pregnancy, and high school dropout rates.“, 2. “Preschool can save families thousands of dollars in child care costs each year.” and 3. “Early childhood education is a bipartisan issue.
  • With a degree in a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Early Childhood Education (BS), one job you can have is a first-grade teacher (which is actually what I want to do). According to study.com, “First-grade teachers deliver lessons on elementary reading, writing, and mathematics and also introduce basic science concepts to students. Oftentimes, early childhood teachers use arts and crafts, classroom games and other activities to help students understand the lessons. Teachers communicate with parents and supervisors about the educational and behavioral challenges of individual children. In addition to grading papers, first-grade teachers write report cards, which provide specific feedback on each child’s performance. They may also meet with parents in one-on-one conferences.”
  • Luckily, the gen-eds I’m taking next semester all work out for majoring in early childhood education, so as far as next semester goes, I won’t have to change up my schedule.
  • My advisor for this major will be Ms. Nola Nicholson.
