Service Learning Reflection

1. For my service learning project, I volunteered at IGNITE Norfolk Food Pantry. I participated on Tuesday, November 12th and Tuesday, November 19th from 2-5 PM. While I volunteered, I helped unload grocery donations from food drives and assisted customers with picking out food.

2. The purpose of IGNITE Norfolk Food Pantry is to help people who are food-insecure by providing them with free food in a food pantry, while remaining completely anonymous. The service IGNITE provides is giving away food to those in need. The need of the community they address is hunger and food-insecure ODU members.

3. After volunteering at IGNITE, I’ve learned that I’m very lucky that I am not food-insecure and I am grateful I have never had to worry about when and where I could find my next meal.

4. The only health-related experience I had prior to this semester was job shadowing at a veterinary clinic. As of right now, I am unsure what I want to pursue in, career wise, but I know I like to help people and I got to show that at my volunteer opportunity.

5. I don’t know what I want to do per se, but I know I like to help people, and I hope that is what I do in my new major I pick– the food pantry helps people which is just what I like. The food pantry could relate to a program like social work because I feel like they help out with food insecurity. I would not choose social work as my parallel major because I am not patient enough with the mentally ill (I have been dealing with family members for years).

6. At the beginning of the semester, I would study for a couple hours a week, and now, I study a little bit more than that, depending on if I have an exam coming up. My study habits have changed because now I am studying days before exams rather than just the night before. For all of my classes, I just like to read over my outline notes.

7. Fourteen weeks ago, I thought I would be studying to be a nurse for the next four years, and now I don’t know what I want to study. One resource I’ve found helpful this semester is chemistry tutoring. I don’t have a resource I consider unhelpful. Something I wish I knew 14 weeks ago was to expect my major to change. Something I’ve learned this semester that will help me next semester is ratemyprofessor.com is accurate and I will continue to use it in the future.
