The study techniques I use outside of my classes include reading the textbook chapters and taking notes, making quizlets, and making outlines of what to study before quizzes and tests. For my Anatomy and Physiology lecture, I study the PowerPoints the professor reviews during class, but for my Anatomy and Physiology lab, I make quizlets to study. Quizlet is a good technique for me because the quizzes and exams are entirely fill in, so I train myself to type in all the answers. For Sociology, I read the textbook chapters and take notes from them, and when it is time for the quizzes, I use my professor’s quiz review to make an outline. In Microbiology everything is open notes, so I review the notes I have taken. My Honors Interpreting the American Past class is difficult to study for, while there aren’t assignments required for studying for Introduction to the Health Professions. Finally, while I am in class, I take advantage of any hands-on learning I can acquire, such as touching bones, because it helps me remember structures better since I am a visual learner. I am doing well in Anatomy and Physiology lecture and lab because I study everyday which helps me retain the information better, and I use all my lab time to take advantage of the hands-on experience.
The class that I experience the most difficulty with is Honors Interpreting the American Past, because you can’t really study for this class. We are required to read a chapter in our book before every class and take a few notes on the chapter. My professor gives us credit for taking notes, but sometimes I feel like I am not taking notes on the correct things. I plan to use study groups for this class so that my peers and I can discuss our notes and decide what the most important details are from the chapters. Over a period of a week, each day I plan on studying about thirty minutes for this class. I do not feel that I should spend more time studying for this class, and according to my professor, I should spend less time reading the chapters in the book because this is college level reading, and students need to become better at skimming the chapters.
For this class, we have four papers to write. I take detailed notes on each chapter and write the page numbers where I found the information, and when it is time to write the papers, I can reference the information I found. I am taking advantage of all the learning supports available to me by asking my professor questions during our class discussions, using study groups, and going to the library. I am not struggling with my motivation to study because I am very driven to get good grades in school. I have not had any confusions with this class or the professor because he is straightforward about his expectations for the class. As of now, I do not have any confusions that remain.
My professor does not give us regular exams for this class, so he says we can prepare for the papers by taking good notes and writing down the page numbers where we found the information. I have not been required to write a paper yet, so I do not know what to do differently, and do not have any confusions or concerns as of right now. One new technique I could use to help me better understand the material in class is to develop better listening skills by looking for the main ideas and using abbreviations and symbols, so I don’t get behind during the lecture. One technique I could use outside of class is going to the professor’s office hours if I develop any questions.
