How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims? Week 13
Interactions between offenders and victims have changed over the years because of technology, before technology evolved into what it is today every crime was done face to face. While now being able to hide behind a screen and commit different crimes without fearing the fear of being caught like you would be caught on a camera or a witness being present if the crimes were done in person. Now committing a crime offenders have gotten lazy and taken the crime route to the internet to hide their faces and crimes which has left victims in some difficult and devastating times. One example is the most common cybercrime being hacking into other systems to steal sensitive information cracking passwords and stealing the victim’s bank statements, card information, and even stealing the victim’s identity. Leaving the victims having to deal with identity theft and freezing their cards to make sure no more suspicious activity occurs in the future, but thanks to the banks the offender doesn’t get away with the crime for too long because when the bank sees unusual habits with spending the bank usually will call the victim to ask if it is them using the card or ask if the victim believes their card has been stolen. Not too long ago at gas stations in Short Pump, VA hackers were tapping into gas station pumps to scan credit cards so the hackers didn’t have to steal the card, they just had to use a piece of technology to tap into the gas pumps and commit the fraud activity. So interactions have changed in tremendous ways which have made life easier for offenders for being able to commit a crime out of the comfort of their homes, and leaving the victims devastated and in a mess. Also, technology has played a part in the victim not even getting to know who did what they did to them because there is no camera to catch the offender.
