Service Learning and Final Reflection

One service-learning activity that I participated in was the Ignite Pantry here on campus. I volunteered on November 13, 2019 at 3:00pm – 5:00 pm and on November 20, 2019 at 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Once we got to the pantry McKayla Winder explain to us how everything goes on in the pantry. First she told us where everything was like the pastries were located in the kitchen area downstairs. Then when you walk upstairs to the room straight ahead was the pantry. In the pantry was all the boxes and food. The food had labels of how much stuff people can get depending on the number in the household. After all the explanations she said we can chill out until someone came in. Some people went and posted flyers everywhere they could. This was not my first time working in a food pantry. I did one in high school for this club I was in. That club name was Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).

The purpose and mission of the pantry is to “Ignite a love of God through humble service”. Some services that the partner provides is that they have church services, mentoring, and the pantry. Needs that they address to the community is providing church for the ones that does not have a church to tend to. Another is helping children with their school work that they are having a hard time in. Lastly, they provide food for the people that do not have enough money to buy it on their own. The pantry is a great thing to have on campus to help out students, teachers, and even the people in the community.

At first I did not know we had something like this on campus and I am really glad that we do because it is very helpful to people. My values about this really changed because most people do not have what others have and they need some other way to get the stuff that they need. My opinions about this pantry is that they could advertise about the pantry, mentoring, and the church service that they have more to the community, probably not everyone knows about the Ignite. A belief about the pantry is that they will get more people there and accomplish their mission statement.

A health related experience that I had this Fall 2019 semester was really not a thing. Well I went to the clinic once in the Webb for my breast that was about it. They treated me very well in the clinic and I loved that experience. I would go back if I needed to. The experience at the pantry has inspired me in so many ways. My desire to pursue in Early Childhood Education, so I can teach the little kids how I have been taught in school. Everyone needs an education does not matter if you are smart or dumb you still need it. You will get better at it as you grow older. I want to be the one to help them succeed in life.

These services are related to my intended career field because you are helping others in ways most people can not help out. This service-learning can relate to any Degree Program because all the majors is helping people put, but in different ways. You always want different ways or opportunities to help others out just because they need it. This major is not my parallel major it is the major I am getting my degree in 2023, but I choose this because we need more teachers out here teaching the younger children and there is nothing more important than having an education.

I spend the same amount of time studying for each class now and at the beginning. I feel as if I do not need to change my studying habits. They are just right the way I have it now. My studying habits are the same. I either study by myself or I get my friends and we study as a group depending on what the subject it is. Any of them would work for my classes. Chemistry is the most challenging class that I have and I think the study groups would be better studying for that class. For my other classes I really do not study for them because I do not have test in them classes or I just know the material by reading ahead.

I expected it to be hard, but not getting work thrown at me all at once. Some resources that I have found helpful to me this semester is the writing center, study groups, and just going to the professor for help. I have found no unhelpful resources this semester. Something I wish I knew 14 weeks ago was how college really is all about. Like all the work you will have at once. One thing I have learned to assist next semester is not to do work at the last minute. Prioritize my time by spending some time doing work ahead of time.
