Journal Entry 9

For the Social Media Disorder scale I scored a 1/9 based on what is provided from then
scale and their descriptions. For what they all pertain to I do feel like I have a very good self
discipline of being able to not constantly be on social media and need it as a part of my daily life.
Out of the nine the only one that I can really relate to is number eight in which it says “Often
used social media to escape from negative feelings?” in which I have and it was for a few weeks
at length that I did use it block feelings. It helped while escaping them, but also seeing stuff
online about other people going through something similar helped move past those feelings and
start feeling better. What I think about the items on the scale is that the questions seem extreme
in a way in what they are asking, while some of these instances may happen in some people
lives, this scale seems more pointed towards teenagers and kids with how they are asked besides
2 questions at most that can apply to any age group. I believe different patterns are found across
the world because of different cultures, laws, and wealth/income of the different countries, that
help limit but also promote the use of social media in certain cases. Take for instance China, they
have multiple laws set in place to limit and censor what individuals can see on the internet,
almost everything is ran through a giant filter it would seem, as to the US where we don’t have
as much laws set on what can be posted on social media unless it is highly illegal, most of what
is posted is just on the internet for the US.
