During my first 100 hours as an intern at Hampton Family Practice, I have observed and learned a lot about the field of health administration and how it plays a role in the healthcare field. The main project that I have assisted with at the practice is the destruction and archiving of paper medical records. The practice switched to all electronic patient records in 2013. They are now working on destroying the outdated patient paper records that they can, according to regulations. If it necessary that they keep some patient records for some more time, then they are scanning in and archiving the paper medical records in the practice database. Once records are destroyed a sheet of paper is filled out and scanned into the patient chart, on the EHR, that shows that the patient’s paper medical records have been destroyed. The archived records are scanned into a practice directory and kept until regulations allow that they can be deleted. The patient paper records that are archived are held and thrown away after 30 days. I have also observed and assisted with the sending and receiving of faxes at the practice. This includes the faxing of medical records, FMLA forms, pre-op authorization forms, subpoenaed records, orders, etc. to outside organizations. I have learned a lot about how paperwork is received, sent out, and archived in the medical records department according to HIPAA regulations. I have enjoyed my experience and gained a lot of knowledge as an intern at Hampton Family Practice so far, and I look forward to completing my last 100 hours.
